Fruitful and Flourishing

“The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. In old age, they still produce fruit.” (Psalm 92:12-14)
 
In the book of Genesis, we encounter God’s original plan for humanity. He lays out with utmost clarity the purpose and vocation of men and women within His created order. “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth” (Gen. 1:28). One way to tell the story of creation, fall, and redemption is through this lens of fruitfulness and flourishing.

The Refiner

Malachi 3:3 “He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, And purge them as gold and silver, That they may offer to the LORD An offering in righteousness.”
 
A few ladies were studying the scriptures when they came upon the verse above.
 
One lady decided to go visit a silversmith, and report to the other on what he said concerning the subject. She went and without telling the silversmith the reason for her visit, begged him to tell her about the process of refining silver.

Strength In Weakness

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. (1Peter 5:6-7)
 
When I was young, I, like most kids, got in trouble with my parents for all sorts of childhood sins, most of which were rooted in a general dismissal of parental wisdom and guidance. I quickly learned that if I said my sin was “pride,” I could fast track the conversation and get to the root of my infraction. Buried in this distant memory is the realization that, even at a young age, humility was one of the primary character traits my parents desired for my life.
